Smartweed or Lady'sThumb Polygonum persicaria

This is a common weed in fields, lawns and along highways. The common name "Lady's Thumb," came about because the dark green splotch on the leaves was said to resemble the print of a lady's thumb. The genus name, Polygonum, means "many-knees," and refers to the many joints in the plant's stem.
